Week 6- Dear AP Psych Student,

Image
Dear future AP Psych kid, Some advice I have for you is to do every single vocab list and to do any extra credit or mind maps. The one time I didn't do the mind map I completely bombed the test so... And doing EC can bump you 5-10 points which adds up to a lot. My favorite activity probably had to be watching the documentaries in class because I found it interesting when they delved into rare psychological problems/abilities people had. The one thing I wish Ms. Halfen would leave out next year is content digs because I rushed so much on them I wasn't focusing so much on the content rather than copying down anything to make it look complete. Next year, I would also recommend an emphasis on vocab by making them individual grades separate from test grades because I felt that the entire AP was basically just vocab. I might also emphasize people and types of psychology a little more because that was personally my weakest point. Good luck kiddos!

Week 4: How Good is My Memory?

Image
Braingle Numbers Test The average numbers people can remember at a time is around 7 but the max I got up to was 10, like the length of a regular phone number. I think this memory test does test your short term memory ability fairly well, but I noticed that I remembered the number strings better if there were repeated numbers because then I could just focus on the other numbers that were in a random order. It only gives you 10 seconds to memorize it so it only focuses on short term memory and not rehearsal. Overall it helped you focus in on your limit, and showed your average short term memory containment amount. It would be a good site to train your memory and your brain on how to chunk and memorize random letters, numbers, or words. Face Memory Test On this test, it gives you a randomly generated face with different features such as hair, nose, and eyes. You have an unlimited amount of time to memorize the face and after you click that you are done with the memorization, t...

Week 3: Ethnicity's Role in Psychology

Image
A social issue that has become an important point of discussion in today's world is the idea of racial equity. Movements like Black Lives Matter and DACA have risen up to combat the injustice of racism in American society. Stereotypes are formed in our minds all the time, and they may not all be bad until these generalizations also make them biased. However, having implicit biases may lead to discrimination in some cases, even if people aren't aware of it.  There are also perceptual illusions like when white subjects perceive black faces as angrier than white faces with the same expression, see harmless objects as weapons when they are in the hands of black men, dislike abstract images that are paired with black faces, and link bad words paired with black faces than white faces.  Field experiments demonstrate that real-world discrimination is still widespread. White applicants get about 50 percent more call-backs than black applicants with the same resumes...

Week 2: Personality Tests

Image
Humanmetrics Jung Typology Test This test was meant to determine your 4 letter personality type based on Carl Jung's and Myers-Briggs research. Many of the questions were obviously geared to test your introvertedness/extrovertedness, whether you used a logical way of thinking or emotions to guide your actions, or if you have a flexible thought process. I got ISFJ (19%, 1%, 22%, 6%) I had a slight preference of introversion, feeling, and judging, and marginal or no preference of sensing over intuition. I wasn't surprised by my results because I think of myself as more introverted around strangers and more of homebody. However, on other topics, I am more moderate instead of highly analytical or highly emotional. I think this test was a good judge of personality because the results were what I thought my characteristics are like. The questions were hyperspecific and a lot of them seemed the same or at least really similar so it really narrowed down what type of person y...

Week 1: My Life Story

Image
A baby girl was born on July 28, 2000 to two Malaysian emigrants in Houston, Texas. I used to be a crybaby (literally) and I was basically stuck to my mother’s side. My first words were “Ma” and “Ba” which I still call my parents today, but because they sound too similar both my parents tend to respond when I say either name.  I have visited Malaysia several times throughout my life and since I speak Hokkien, a Malaysian dialect, there wasn't a language gap between adult family members and I, but trying to speak to kids my own age was pretty difficult because my Mandarin skills are rusty/nonexistent. However, every time I visit I definitely feel a cultural gap and the effects of being an ABC (American Born Chinese) because not having English as a first language in America made me feel different here but when I went back to my parent's hometown I was the most fluent in English. I was a pretty shy child that used to lash out an...
