Week 4: How Good is My Memory?

Braingle Numbers Test

The average numbers people can remember at a time is around 7 but the max I got up to was 10, like the length of a regular phone number. I think this memory test does test your short term memory ability fairly well, but I noticed that I remembered the number strings better if there were repeated numbers because then I could just focus on the other numbers that were in a random order. It only gives you 10 seconds to memorize it so it only focuses on short term memory and not rehearsal. Overall it helped you focus in on your limit, and showed your average short term memory containment amount. It would be a good site to train your memory and your brain on how to chunk and memorize random letters, numbers, or words.

Face Memory Test

On this test, it gives you a randomly generated face with different features such as hair, nose, and eyes. You have an unlimited amount of time to memorize the face and after you click that you are done with the memorization, the face disappears and you must pick options from a scroll down list for each feature. Each list has 3 different styles of features for each feature so after you finish, you click okay and it tells you how many parts you got correct. In my case it said, "8 CORRECT BITS! That's GOOD ... stop that smug look!" I did fairly well on this test but it did make it fairly easy since I spent about 20 seconds scrutinizing the face before moving on. I think this test is a good judgement of facial memory but not necessarily short term memory unless you time yourself.

Memory Loss Online Verbal Test

This memory test had 3 parts to it. The first part had a list of 40 words with the option to say the words were very/mildly pleasant or unpleasant. The second part asked you to recall as many words from that list as possible. The third part asked you to pick out the previous words from an option of two choices. My recall score was 4 and my recognition score was 40. I did average for recall and above average for recognition. It is normal for recognition to be much higher than recall because the former gives you clues to jog your memories and see which option is more familiar. Overall, this test was very informative. I liked the contrast they gave between recall and recognition because it reminded me of free response vs multiple choice questions. One you had to wrack your brain to remember and the other was simply judging to see which answer seemed the most familiar. I think this was a good judge of how powerful one's memory is.
